SESSION 3:

No More “Empty Words” - Sustainable Development at The Core of Higher Education

Wednesday, September 21, 2022 | 9:30 - 10:30AM (JST)

(Tuesday, September 20, 2022 | 8:30 - 9:30PM EST)

Format: Webinar

Length: 60 minutes

Cost: FREE

Language: English

The purpose of this session is to introduce activities, programs and research projects that portray the engagement 3 different universities show for sustainable development: CEU Valencia (Europe), Kansai University (Japan) and Florida International University (USA). These three HEI are changing their campus environment towards an all-encompassing sustainable culture, acting on academics, research and community.

Providing a blueprint on how to manage and deliver the behavioural changes needed is a difficult task but will undoubtedly go through these stages: defining your identity and mission, designing a masterplan accordingly (including courses syllabuses, university life, research projects, publications, and investments) and, from there on, communicating it.

The experience of Kansai University will focus on the educational content, as it has been following a systematic configuration of academic projects such as COIL, being ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) the driving force conceptualization of their SDGs-bound COIL/VE. Florida International University will share their best practices in research with its ambitious lines of investigation regarding Global Learning Initiatives, inclusion and development. CEU Valencia has dived into a communication project to enhance staff and student’s sustainability skills through continuous educational content in its communication strategy.

Alfonso Díaz Segura

Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation

University CEU Cardenal Herrera

Alfonso Díaz Segura is Vice Chancellor for Internationalisation at the University CEU Cardenal Herrera in Spain. He is responsible for international policies at the University and has implemented the Global Classroom, a framework of initiatives that allow students to acquire soft skills in internationalisation, regardless of where they come from and which degree they are studying. Therefore the international experience permeates all the layers at the institution, from teachers to staff, focusing on the students. Starting in 2019, COIL projects can be found in all the faculties and currently the challenge is to expand the offer with mirrored classes, guest lectures, or international weeks in every degree. Alfonso studied Architecture and has a PhD in Architectural Projects, combining for years both the professional and the academic activity. He also has an MBA. In 2020, he joined the Expert Community Internationalisation at Home as an Associate.
